PARENTS in Fletton and Stanground ward have welcomed the installation of an Autism Communication Board at a popular play area, by Southfields Primary School. The board contains a large selection of images and symbols to help non-verbal individuals, especially children, to communicate their feelings and wishes.
The board is the latest to go up in and around the city, and was arranged and paid for by Conservative ward councillor Oliver Sainsbury, using his Community Leadership Fund (CLF). The fund is a sum of money allocated to each councillor for the benefit of their ward.
Autism is one of several neurological conditions that make it difficult for people to verbalise their needsand feelings. Pointing to selected images can help them communicate with those around them, said Oliver. "It can reduce frustration by giving them a voice while also raising awareness among park users. In the days after the board was put up several people got in touch via Facebook and email to say how much it was appreciated," he added.
One parent said the board is a small way in which we can help the wider public accept that while 'autistic people are different, they are not less'.
