THE former Lion pub in Ramsey St Mary's could be given a new lease of life if a community project gets off the ground to purchase and refurbish the empty property.
If sufficient support is forthcoming, residents and local businesses will be offered the opportunity to buy shares, with the organisers also hoping to apply for appropriate grants. The scheme has the backing of MP Shailesh Vara, who paid a site visit with district councillor Steve Corney to meet project leader Micky O'Donoghue and hear more about this exciting initiative.
The emphasis will be on The Lion being run as a community pub and focal point for residents and groups who could use its facilities for a variety of activities. Shailesh welcomed the idea, describing it as an 'enterprising local venture' that would benefit residents and the wider community.
Cllr Corney, who is also Mayor of Ramsey, added his support: "It would be great to see the pub come back to life as a community-owned business, creating a focal point for the village."
