FOUR of our Huntingdonshire District Council candidates find themselves in an unusual position following the close of nominations on Tuesday (April 5th). With no opposition candidates coming forward to stand against them, all four are duly elected. They are Jon Neish and Paul Hodgson-Jones (Holywell-cum-Needingworth) and Simon Bywater and Ross Martin in Sawtry ward.
This is believed to be the first time such a situation has arisen in Huntingdonshire and means no election will take place in those two wards. Ross, a Young Conservative standing for the first time, has mixed feelings. He told us: "On one hand, this is great news but on the other, I was looking forward to the campaign, speaking to residents about our plans and my own personal values. In any event, I promise to work hard on behalf of all our residents regardless of which way they might have voted, and stand up for the best interests of all our villages."
The Conservative Party was able to put forward a full complement of 52 district council candidates across North West Cambridgeshire and neighbouring Huntingdonshire constituencies. No other political party or group put forward more than 20.
