TARTAN of all kinds was on show as Association members and friends came together to celebrate Burns' Night, a traditional Scottish event to commemorate the poet Robert 'Rabbie' Burns.
Kilts, ties, sashes, shawls and waistcoats added a touch of colour to the crowd - and we were especially impressed with the green Turnbull Tartan trews worn with a velvet jacket... you know who you are, Rob!
Tickets sold like hot (Bannock) cakes, in part due to the attendance of our guest speaker David Mair, a member of the ceremonial society known as Keepers of the Quaich. The society works to promote Scotch whisky around the world and being inducted as a member recognises an individual's contribution to the industry as an expert over many years.
The evening started with a procession of the haggis, accompanied by piper Gary Kernaghan, after which David read the famous Burns' poem Address to a Haggis. A classic three-course meal was served with huge thanks to the chef and staff of Peterborough Milton Golf Club who looked after us so well.
David gave an entertaining and well-received talk highlighting the merits of some of the lesser-known distilleries, using a map of Scotland to illustrate the characteristics and distinctive flavours of single malt and blended varieties. He was ably assisted by district councillor Paul Hodgson-Jones who acted as a human easel to hold up the map! Vote of thanks was given by our MP, the Rt Hon Shailesh Vara, who attended with his wife Beverley.
The evening ended with distribution of raffle prizes and an auction, including a bottle of Westminster whisky signed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. "It was fabulous to see so many people enjoying this event and thank you to all who made it happen, to everyone who attended and have been so generous with their support and positive feedback," said Association chairman Graham Bull. At least two people asked if we would repeat the event next year so watch this space!
